First Day on the Road

Mason Strehl June 17, 2018

On Saturday, June 16th, I moved out of my home and into my truck. Compressing everything I owned to fit comfortably was definitely a chore, but after hours of sorting and getting rid of stuff I managed to make it work. At about 1pm I drove away from where I stayed for the past 6 months into uncertainty.

I don't really have a first destination, but I do have plans for the Wonderland trail on July 1st. That gives me just short of 2 weeks to fill. For the first day I had plans already, I got to meet up with a high school friend for lunch, then went out to see sunset over Samish Bay. The sky was brilliantly pink and the few clouds that dotted the sky were lit just the same. From there there were no plans and I left to find a place for the night - my first night fully living in the truck.

Just 20 minutes north of Bellingham I found the perfect spot and set up. The sky was clear and the moon was illuminated red. It reflected in the water that almost entirely surrounded me.

I woke up just before sunset to brilliant light and color streaming in my window. It was warm out, even at 5:15am. I enjoyed the sunrise for a bit before going back to bed. When I woke up later I started getting things done - I made breakfast, roasted a batch of coffee, and started making the curtains for my truck. It was such a relaxing morning sitting in the sunshine and going about my day. First day is a success!
